A great way to help your students remember important information and/or details is to preface it by saying, “I probably shouldn’t tell you this,” because as soon as you say those six words, you WILL have their attention. For example, you might say, “Remember class, we have a field trip tomorrow morning, and the bus is leaving at 7:30. I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but you ought to be here by 7:15.”
If you really want to add some emphasis, look around from side to side while you’re saying it or maybe say it in a whisper. To get the full effect, try adding, “I might be getting myself into trouble for what I’m about to say.” That will really cause your students to sit up and listen.
“Okay everyone, I probably shouldn’t be telling you this, (lower voice, look side to side) and I might even be getting myself into a little bit of trouble, (wait for it) but i goes before e, except after c.”
